Nikon’s Expanding Mirrorless Range

by Alex W.

Nikon finally ventured into the fast-growing mirrorless camera market in the second half of 2018, launching the top-spec Nikon Z7 just before releasing a more budget friendly model with the Nikon Z6.

Many think that this foray into the mirrorless market came too late, but it isn't stopping Nikon from putting another foot in the industry. Now, they have confirmed another release is in the works.

Nikon's New Mirrrorless Offering

What's the latest then?

Well, Nikon president Toshikazu Umatate confirmed that they're planning to release a mirrorless equivalent to the top-of-the-range Nikon D5 in the future.

Umatate confirmed this in an interview with a Japanese newspaper, although he didn't go into much more detail unfortunately. We're yet to discover the release date or any of the exact specifications, but considering the D5 is the leading professional DSLR camera from Nikon we can assume it's going to be a beast.

What can we expect?

The Nikon Z7 already boasts a higher resolution than the D5, and is more akin to the monster Nikon D850 in many respects.

However, despite it being a mirrorless camera it still lags behind the D5 in continuous shooting rate, as well as maximum ISO and dual memory card slots.

We're expecting the new offering to have increased resolution, as the D5's 20.8MP is looking a bit on the low side now. In addition, we can expect fantastic high ISO performance and an improved continuous shooting rate. Of course, even more features will need to be added if it's going to be placed in a higher price bracket than the already expensive Z7.

That's Not All From Nikon

Nikon aren't playing around any more. There is more news from their camp, although this is more of a rumour than anything.

Nikkei reported that Nikon has plans to announce a more budget oriented mirrorless camera this year. The newcomer will feature the same Z-series lens mount, but the price point could be under the $1,000 mark.
