Peak Design Announce Innovative New Travel Tripod and It’s Exploding on Kickstarter!

by Alex W.

If you’ve been reading Click and Learn Photography for any length of time, you might’ve noticed we’re quite fond of Peak Design gear.

We recommend their stylish, practical, and versatile bags in a number of articles around the site, including in our Best Camera Bags for Photographers article here.

Why do we recommend them? Because they’re incredibly well made, innovatively designed, and they look the part too.

Now, they’re releasing a brand new product that’s been 4 years in the making – Their Peak Design Travel Tripod!

What is the Peak Design Travel Tripod

Well, it pretty much does what it says on the tin: It’s a travel tripod, made by Peak Design.

Nothing groundbreaking there, right? Or is there?

Peak Design’s upcoming offering has a ton of new little features to tempt you into buying it. You can find more details on their Kickstarter page below, but here’s a quick rundown:

  • Truly Portable – It folds away to a positively microscopic 39.4cm long and a tiny 8.3cm diameter.
  • Huge Height Range – The 152.4cm maximum height is up there with the best of travel tripods, but what really sets it apart is the minimum height of just 14cm.
  • Compact Ball head – Most travel tripods are let down by their bulky ballheads, but the Peak Design Travel Tripod includes an innovative new design which gets rid of all the gears and knobs on the side.
  • Accessories – Unlike most tripods, the Peak Design Travel Tripod comes with a smartphone mount included. as well as their standard DSLR/Mirrorless plate. It also works with L-Brackets, which is an absolute must.

There’s tons of other features worth checking out on their Kickstarter page, but these are just a few of the ones that caught our eye. Here’s a great video from Peter McKinnon as he puts it to the test:

How Can I Buy One?

With this being a Kickstarter campaign, you can’t officially purchase the Peak Design Travel Tripod yet.

However, if you pledge $289 you will add your name to the list of orders for the aluminium version, while a $479 pledge will get you the carbon fiber version. Both of these pledge amounts are below the retail price too, so you’re saving money!

Check out the amount pledged on this project already… At the time of writing a huge $3.1 million has been pledged, far surpassing their $500,000 goal in just a couple of days.

When Will it Be Released?

With this still being in development, it’s impossible to say exactly when the Peak Design Travel Tripod will be launched.

Peak Design’s plan is to get all Kickstarter backers’ tripods shipped out by the end of December 2019, but that is just an estimate. It could be finished sooner, but unforeseen circumstances could potentially delay release.

Should I Wait for Release?

Honestly, that’s entirely up to you. If you want to get your hands on a potentially excellent product before most other people, I’d definitely recommend pledging and putting your name down on that list.

There is a very good chance that such a popular tripod will be on backlog for a long time after the initial release.

However, if you’re happy to wait until next spring and don’t mind potentially paying a bit more for the tripod then maybe waiting for the official release is the best course of action.

Of course, if you do want to strike while the iron is hot then click below to head straight to their Kickstarter campaign:
